There are three routes to obtaining certification as a vet tech in Oregon.

You can:

Complete a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field such as Zoology and have gained at least 1,500 hours of relevant work experience as a veterinary assistant, or

Complete an Associate degree in Applied Science – Veterinary Technology or a related field and have gained at least 3,000 hours of relevant work experience as a veterinary assistant, or

Complete 6,000 hours of relevant work experience as a veterinary assistant

Whether coming from the college route or the work experience route the applicant must have passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE).

In addition to passing the VTNE applicants for licensing must pass the Oregon Jurisprudence Exam/Regional Disease Test, as well as attend and finish a 20 hour radiation safety course..

In Oregon a license is obtained from the Veterinary Medicine Examining Board

In 2005 the Oregon Veterinary Technician and Assistant Association (OVTAA) was formed to win recognition for vet techs and vet assistants in Oregon. The OVTAA is a membership organization which seeks to present a voice for technicians and assistants in the state of Oregon on matters relevant to these employees

There is one campus in Oregon accredited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) to provide approved training in veterinary technology.

Obtaining a license to become a veterinary technician (vet tech) in Wisconsin is different in some respects from the process followed in many other states.

There are two routes to obtaining certification as a vet tech in Wisconsin. The first is to graduate from a 4 semester vet tech course from an approved training college or to have worked at least two years for a licensed veterinarian who is able to provide an affidavit that during that two year period “50% of applicant’s time has been spent in practical field experience and the remainder in laboratory work, office procedures, and technical training.”

Whether coming from the college route or the work experience route the applicant must have passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE).

In addition to passing the VTNE applicants for licensing must pass the Wisconsin Statutes and Rules exam which sets out the regulations regarding the legal practices of vet techs in Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin a license is obtained from the Department of Safety and Professional Services

There are 6 campuses in Wisconsin accredited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) to provide approved training in veterinary technology. Five of these campuses are part of Globe University. The sixth college is the Madison Area Technical College.

Globe University, originally called Globe College was founded in 1885 in Minnesota, as an institution which provided technical training different from a conventional university. Since 2007 it has been known as Global University and has campuses in Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

All 5 of the Globe University campuses provide both a two year Associate Degree course in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology and a 4 year Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Technology Management.

In the Associate degree, in addition to learning theoretical subjects such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, anatomy and physiology, practical study will take place in such topics as animal nursing care, anesthesiology, dentistry, drawing blood and other lab work. The course will also include an externship with a licensed vet so as to develop hands-on skills.

A Bachelor’s degree will include all that is covered in an Associate degree but will also cover more advanced topics such as: advanced anesthesia and dentistry, emergency and critical care, small animal behavior, equine care, laboratory animal management and integrative medicine. In addition training will cover office procedures including the use of veterinary software, and business management.

You can qualify to get a license to practice as a veterinary technician (vet tech) in Washington from an accredited vet tech school. Vet tech schools in Washington have to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

The other requirements are that you have passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and the Washington State Examination for Veterinary Technicians. The Washington exam is specifically about laws and regulations about vet techs relating to Washington state while the VTNE is related to national standards. The Washington exam can be taken six months before graduation from a vet tech school and a 90% pass score is required.

Washington used to permit appropriate equivalent experience to count towards eligibility for taking the VTNE and Washington state exams. However since July 2010 that route is no longer available to new candidates.

There are 5 colleges accredited by the AVMA to provide vet tech training in Washington.

Bellingham Technical College

There are no licensing or certification programs for vet techs in the state of Utah. However most people wanting to pursue a career as a vet tech in Utah arrange to achieve national certification from the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).

In the absence of state certification many vet techs start off as veterinary assistants and then seek national vet tech certification.

To get a certificate from the AAVSB prospective vet techs must undertake and graduate from an approved 2 year veterinary technology degree. Once students have completed this course they are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).

Once students have successfully passed the VTNE, they are deemed to be “certified” through the AAVSB, and can use that certification anywhere in the US, including Utah.

Getting national certification means that this qualification is transferable from state to state. Some states, but not Utah will require vet techs to take a state exam or test in addition to the VTNE. As long as the vet techs keep up with the continuing professional education requirements they will be able to retain the national AAVSB certificate.

To take the VTNE exam in Utah students must apply directly to the AAVSB to register for the exam. The exam is administered in Utah by the Utah Career College in West Jordan, Utah.

Vet tech degree courses in Utah have to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA). There are 3 campuses in Utah where an approved vet tech degree course is provided, all run by one university.

Broadview University

Broadview University was established in 1977 and was originally known as the Bryman School. Initially it was situated in downtown Salt Lake City. At the start it focused on medical assisting but has now broadened its curriculum to take on board other vocational disciplines.

Broadview offers Associate Degrees in Veterinary Technology in 3 campuses – Layton, Orem and West Jordan. The AVMA accredited the courses in West Jordan in 2003, in Layton in 2009, and Orem in February 2011.

The campuses offer a 2 year full time course of training. The teaching covers medical terminology, laboratory animal care, surgical assisting, radiology, other veterinary clinical skills and veterinary office procedures, including the use of standard veterinary software. In addition the courses provide more general education in mathematics,, natural sciences, especially chemistry and biology, social sciences and the humanities.

Towards the end of the training students take part in a supervised off-site externship within a veterinary practice so as to develop their hands-on skills and to get used to a standard veterinary working environment.

Throughout the training students work with lab and rescue animals so as to develop hands-on skills.

There are no statutory licensing or certification programs for vet techs in the state of Minnesota. However the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), which represents vets in Minnesota, is working to amend the relevant state legislation and in the interim has set out its own non statutory system of registration. Most people wanting to pursue a career as a vet tech in Minnesota arrange to achieve national certification from the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).

To get a certificate from the AAVSB prospective vet techs must undertake and graduate from an approved 2 year veterinary technology degree. Once students have completed this course they are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).

Once students have successfully passed the VTNE, they are deemed to be “certified” through the AAVSB, and can use that certification anywhere in the US, including Minnesota.

To take the VTNE exam in Minnesota students must apply directly to the AAVSB to register for the exam. Once the student passes the VTNE the MVMA issues a certificate of registration. Vet tech degree courses in Minnesota have to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA). There are 13 campuses in Minnesota where an approved vet tech degree course is provided, with one school of business running 9 of them.

Globe University / Minnesota School of Business

Globe University is linked to the Minnesota School of Business and between them they run veterinary technology programs in 9 campuses in Minnesota. Globe University was founded in 1885 and the Minnesota School was founded in 1877. Globe has campuses in South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

All 9 of the Globe University/Minnesota School of Business campuses provide both a two year Associate Degree course in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology and a 4 year Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Technology Management.
